JANUARY

Friday, 4. SALA ARGENTA. 20:30
RECITAL
"WOODY ALLEN & HIS NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BAND”

Conductor, Eddy Davis. Woody Allen, clarinet. Eddy Davis, conductor and banjo. Conal Fowkes, double bass. Robert García, drums. Cinthya Sayer, piano. Simon Wettenhall, trumpet. Jerry Zigmont, trombone.
Woody Allen. “I'm just an amateur clarinet player. If I weren't famous, people wouldn't come to my concerts. They come more to see me than to listen to me”. That's how Woody Allen puts it. Not only he is known all over the world as an actor and director, and writer, he is also a jazz musician, captivated, as he says by the music from New Orleans. “I learnt to play the soprano sax when I was thirteen or fourteen, but later I chose the clarinet because I have always loved New Orleans jazz and especially Sydney Bechet. In my lost hours I listen to other music, opera, classical, modern jazz, and I also like the songs from the Broadway musicals, but I tend to prefer music from New Orleans”. Allen admits that he is an amateur, and even recognises that he does not know how to read music, but as he says “to make up for that, the musicians in my band are all recognised professionals who are excellent at this kind of jazz”.

Friday, 11. Saturday, 12. SALA ARGENTA. 20:30
THEATRE

VICTORIA THIERRÉE CHAPLIN COMPANY
“Aurelia's Oratory”
by Victoria Thierrée Chaplin
Actress, Aurélia Thierrée. Dancer, Julio Monge
Directed and Created by Victoria Thierrée Chaplin
“A dazzling exhibition of theatrical magic”. Aurelia's Oratory is inspired in the magic of music hall, variety and the circus, mixing the mystery of theatre with dizzying images more from dreams than reality. In this upside down world with unexpected meetings and incongruent characters, nothing is quite what it seems. There is no start or finish, simply a myriad of pieces from a visual puzzle, ruled by the strange and poetic logic of our imagination. Victoria Thierée Chaplin directs her daughter in this work of fantasy, a mixture of Dance, music, acrobatics, puppets and magic. A spectacle that promises to make dreams come true and transport the audience to a world where the impossible can happen.

Saturday, 19. SALA PEREDA. 17:00 and 19:00
THE PALACE FOR KIDS
"Metal and its colours"

The concert “Metal and its colours” is placed by six musicians, each of whom has their own musical career.
Pep Golandla, conductor, and Jordi Cardoner, stage direction, have assembled the group to play this concert. They have a common goal: to feel and to make us feel the music they offer us. To achieve this communication, they play the programme by heart, move around the audience, feel their energy, seek their complicity and are able to keep moving us each day.The projections that appear on the screen at different stages of the concert also play an important role and are a good link between the live concert and the CD-book of the concert.

Friday, 25. Saturday 26. SALA ARGENTA. 20:30
THEATRE
NATIONAL CLASSICAL THEATRE COMPANY
“No-one beneath the king”
by Rojas Zorrilla.
Laila Ripio, version and direction.
“This comedy is so popular in Spain that it is hard to find an averagely educated youngster why can't recite some or other quotation from it; it is constantly shown in cities and is well known in towns and villages for being the first play pulled out by travelling companies passing through. It can therefore be said that this comedy is the most well-known in Spain of all the plays of our enormous repertoire”. That was how Don Eugenio de Ochoa began his prologue of “No-one beneath the king, nor more honourable worker” Garcia del Castañar in Volume 4 of his Treasures of Spanish Theatre. After staging “Entre bobos anda el juego”, in 1999 we have joined forces once again with Rojas Zorilla, but this time bringing to the stage the play that gave him most success, thus making it part of our repertoire. We hope that our production is a fitting contribution to the tributes being given this year from far and wide to one of our most appreciated playwrights.

Thursday, 31. SALA ARGENTA. 20:30
RECITAL
"EMIR KUSTURICA & THE NO SMOKING BAND"

Emir Kusturica was born in Sarajevo in 1954, in the former Yugoslavia, and studied cinematography in the FAMU, school of dramatic arts in Prague. He started his career directing TV shows. His first film as director was “Do You Remember Dolly Bell?” in 1981. He reached worldwide fame with “Father's on a business trip” 1985, a black comedy about fratricidal wars in his country. His cinema is tinted with magical realism, mixing comedy and drama in a constant reflection on the collective future of his compatriots. He is an admirer of Hitchcock, Fellini and Jean Vigo. He has won the Palme d'Or at Cannes on two occasions and the Golden Lion at Venice on two others.

COME Y CALLA (Shut up and Eat) PRODUCTIONS
"The Little Prince”
by Antoine de Saint Exupery
Pablo R. Escola stage direction.
“We seem to be trained to give immediate answers. This is red, this is blue, that girl is tall, that man is black… Although the drawing may be of an elephant inside a boa, we see a drawing of a hat and we firmly believe that is right, and we forget that there can be more options, more colours, more qualities that we don't see, and we reject the possibility of seeing a little beyond the simple appearance of things. When I reread “the little prince” as an adult, I remembered this innocent way of looking at the world that I had as a child. When I was able to keep the questions and did not try to answer them. When I could see elephants when there were apparently only hats”. Pablo Ramos Escobar

THEATRE
"Homebody/Kabul"
by Tony Kushner
Mario Gas, mise en scène and direction.
A journey that started in London in 1988 and continued in Kabul under the Talibans, to return to England a year later. This show will make everybody sit up and take note. Tony Kushner, as he did with Angels in America, Slavs, and more recently the script for Munich directed by Spielberg-questions universal themes that affect us all.

Friday, 15. SALA ARGENTA. 20:30
CLASSICAL MUSIC
GRIGORY SOKOLOV, piano

“Preludes by Chopin”. Forty years alter Gregory Sokolov won, at the age of 16 one of the most important competitions, The Moscow Tchaikovsky in 1966, the world has been blessed with what one American critic described recently as being “a class of pianism, musicality, and art that one thought has been lost for ever.” Sponsored from a young age by Emil Gilels and recognised as an outstanding artist on the Russian music scene since a teenager, Solokov has practically reached the status of a legend for lovers of music and the piano in all parts of the world. Nowadays, Sokolov is considered to be by many the greatest pianist of our time.

Saturday, 16. SALA ARGENTA. 20:30
DANCE
BALLET D'EUROPE

Jean-Charles Gil, Artistic direction.
PROGRAMME:
PART I. “Schubert in Love”. “Schubert In Love puts on stage brief encounters, moments of pure emotion around the chamber music of the composer (…) Instead of using visual or simply biographical effects, Jean Charles Gil, pushes himself against the current tide, to reveal choreographical physicality through dynamism, speed, unison, and the width of movement itself“. A. Freschel, Le César, JANUARY 2007
PART II. “Mozart's Requiem”. “Face to face with the mystery of death, what way to respond other than celebrating life… We might think that Mozart had left his Réquiem unfinished, denying that it had become his own funeral litany. For this reason my choreography wishes to bring to the movement the symbolic strength of the work, paying tribute to Life without depression. Dance, seeking elevation, plays with the weight of the body to achieve greater lightness. Like time in suspense the purified movement transcends the music.

"Baroque"
by Tomaz Pandur and Darko Lukic
With: Blanca Portillo, Asier Etxeandia and Chema León
Tomaz Pandur direction.
About the show. A drawing room before the French Revolution. The complete history of the western world in a shelter, on the eve of a cataclysm of great change. Outside, the world is being split at the seams that had kept it together for thousands of years; inside, silk is cracking under fear and beauty. Very soon nothing will be the same. The exterior and the interior will turn into two remote universes, so much so that humankind will become a never ending journey in search of a meeting point. But at this precise moment, the outside and inside are still, for a short time, the one and same universe. The ladies' powder rooms and the cities speak languages understood by both worlds. The world and the home are still the very same.

Friday, 11. SALA ARGENTA. 20:30
THEATRE
LA CUADRA DE SEVILLA
“Flamenco for Traviata”
by Salvador Távora
Based on musical fragments from the opera “La Traviata”, by Guiseppe Verdi.
Salvador Távora, direction.
About the show. The relationship between flamenco and the pain and deep-felt sensitivity of the singers, with the cultural atmosphere of the night world and prostitution, had, from the times of the singing cafés or tablaos, a strong influence on the lyrical inspiration and style of professionals of that world. This was so much so that there are clear links in fandango, a singing form later belittled by flamenco connoisseurs, whose creative freedom without the conditioning models of stifling purity made each neighbourhood in Seville, Granada, Ubeda, Malaga, Almeria Jaen, Cordoba or Cadiz associated with a singer and a style. A singer with particular ways of life reflected in the fandangos; in the different measurements of its construction of sound, in its dramatic modulations, and the meaning of its lyrics; some sung without having been written down before. A singer, some singers who, when academics set down rules in the 1970s, were unfairly relegated, forgotten, and at times downtrodden by rules that mummified the dramatic modulations of the singing in general and which rejected fandango in particular, due to its anarchical, creative freedom and for being part a reflection of popular feeling.

"The Judas Kiss"
by David Hare
Miguel Narros, direction.
Two moments in a man's life, of a human being who fights to defend a model of society that accuses him of having the boldness to live his life according to his principles and what may appear to more provocative, according to his feelings; although these will leave him dragged off by an almost ill -like passion that will lead to his ruin. Because one of the many contradictions of the human being is that he pursues his desires even though they go against his good. But the interesting aspect of Wilde in the Judas Kiss is that he accepts, in a heroic act of coherent obstinacy, the punishment applied not only for not giving up a passion but for sticking firm to ideals that converted him into a model, and a point of reference in the fight for civil rights and individual freedom.

Saturday, 26. SALA ARGENTA. 20:30
DANCE
BALLET NATIONAL DE MARSEILLE

PROGRAMME: "Metapolis II" by Frédéric Flamand, Thom Mayne, Dominique Perrault, Zaha Hadid
Frédéric Flamand / Dominique Perrault, concept
Frédéric Flamand, choreography. Dominique Perraul, scenography
World premiere 15 July 2005 at the Marseille Festival.
1950,Marseille, the Radiant City of Le Courbusier. Also known as “the house of Fada” it is a perfect representation of the kind of utopia for which the architects of modernity were still able to fight for, in their desire to model time and space with the concept of general well-being in mind. We would like to evoke a global Radiant City where the human body is object of incessant energy flows, submerged in the infinite ramifications of networks and moulded by ideologies of healthy and safety. This new creation, my third look at the city after Metapolis and Silent Collisions, is a continuation of my project Dance and Architecture.
